S/V Yankee Clipper

Built in 1927, CRESSIDA, was one of the only armor plated private yachts in the world. Confiscated during World War II as a war prize, she was later acquired by the Vanderbilts and renamed PIONEER. Racing off Newport Beach, PIONEER was considered one of the fastest tall ships on the west coast. In 1965, she joined the Windjammer fleet and was christened YANKEE CLIPPER. Completely restored to her former majesty and beauty, her modern comforts enhance the nautical heritage and seafaring traditions of yesterday.

For tall ship aficionados who love the feel of a fast, powerful ship under full sail, Windjammer's S/V Yankee Clipper is made-to-order. One of the only armor-plated private yachts in the world, Cressida (now, Yankee Clipper) was built in Kiel, Germany in 1927 by German industrialist and manufacturer Alfred Krupp. She was confiscated by the U.S. Coast Guard after World War II and later acquired by the famous Vanderbilt family who renamed her Pioneer and raced her off Newport Beach, California. At the time, Pioneer was considered one of the fastest tall ships on the West Coast. Windjammer founder Captain Mike Burke acquired her in 1965 and, following extensive renovations, renamed her Yankee Clipper. In 1984 she was completely restored to her former majesty and beauty, with refurbishments totaling $4 million that included a new design modification of three masts, purpleheart and angelique woods, as well as a new engine room with custom-designed navigation, communication and weather monitoring devices. After extensive renovations in 1987, she is still the fastest of the Windjammer fleet, making an impressive 14 knots (about 16 miles per hour) under full sail, and one of the fastest tall ships at sea At 197-feet, this three-masted schooner draws 17-feet with a 30-foot beam. She accommodates 64 Shipmates in 32 cabins and carries a crew of 24.
