Legacy in the Bahamas - from WJBC's Press Release:

Windjammer Barefoot Cruises Returns to the Bahamas
--S/V Legacy to Offer 4, 5 and 8-day Cruises from Miami and Nassau this Summer
Thursday, December 20, 2001

MIAMI BEACH, FLA - Windjammer Barefoot Cruises today announced that this summer it would be returning to the region that launched the cruise line over 50 years ago, the beautiful and mystical Bahamas. S/V Legacy, the 294-foot staysail schooner that carries 122 passengers, will offer 4-, 5- and 8-day cruises from May 24 to September 6.

The ship will be duel homeported in Miami and Nassau and will sail itineraries that includes Bimini, Gun Cay, Great Abaco, the Berry Islands, and Freeport. Its 4-day itinerary has Legacy sailing from Miami to Nassau. Its 5-day itinerary has her sailing from Nassau to Miami (visiting a largely different series of islands than the 4-day cruise). The 8-day itinerary combines the two legs, sailing round-trip from Miami.

"It's very exciting to be returning to the Bahamas," said Susan Burke, president of Windjammer. "It is region in which my father, Cap'n Mike, started the cruise line back in 1947. For many, many years, it was the "playground" of all of Windjammer's ships." For nearly 25 years, Windjammer ships sailed exclusively in the Bahamas until the mid- 1970s when the fleet branched out into the Leeward and Windward islands of the Caribbean.

The Bahamas itinerary offers a myriad of leisure options for passengers. Known for having some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, they offer magnificent snorkeling and diving. The Bahamas have also been haled as one of the best deep-sea fishing regions in the world. For the less adventuresome types, Nassau and Freeport are well known for incredible duty-free shopping. "And, the region has a great storied past," added Burke. "It was in the Bahamas that Columbus first landed in the New World. The islands were a haven for many of the most notorious pirates and Ernest Hemmingway frequently fished its waters and was a regular at "The Complete Angler" bar on Bimini.
